One Redwood Tree, Three Decks

We said it when we selected the five top remodels in our Kitchen and Bath contest, and the sentiment was echoed again this time when we sat down to settle up on the best decks in America. Picking (only) five winners wasn’t an easy task, and we all had our favorites. We want to thank all of you who posted photos of your deck projects in our gallery. We knew we had some awesome deck builders and designers out there! Thank you for sharing your work with us.
And now. . .the winners, in no particular order (drum roll):

We loved this trio of decks because, besides being gorgeous, they had a story. Years after lightning struck the redwood on his property, Jack gave the tree a second life.

The morning after Kim posted this deck, more than one of the guys came by my cubicle and asked, “Did you see that deck?” I knew exactly what they were talking about. Oh, yeah. I saw it. Kim’s Reeds at the Lake, Artistry in Decks, and A Little Bit of Italy were standouts as well, in no small part because of his signature inlay work.

One of the best things about this deck is how unexpected it is. Goat wire? Galvanized plumbing pipe? Redwood? All of it, on the same deck, and on a Craftsman-style house no less? It works. And, it’s beautiful.

Someone said to me, “If this were my deck, I’d never go in the house.” Particularly on a weekend like the one coming up, who wouldn’t want to hang out here, grill some chicken or burgers, mix up a drink or two?

Honorable Mentions. . .
One name, and multiple projects kept coming up in our conversations about beautiful, well-built decks. The name was JoeWood; the projects were, well, every one he posted. If you want to be inspired, check out his Curved Deck, Sea Side Deck and Koi Pond Deck.
Greene & Greene Detailed Deck: by Tom4055
This deck garnered multiple votes from our editors, also due to its craftsmanship and attention to detail. It’s an all-around elegant expression of the style.
And finally, we’ve got to give a shout-out to those that gave out the underdog-vibe (i.e. “Not likely the type of deck FHB had in mind for this contest. . .”). You were wrong, junkhound. Your Frugal 99% Recycled Deck got the attention of our editors, for sure. Very cool work! And Ted W. proved that Small, Cozy and Functional decks—when designed as well as his is—can also be. . .simply perfect as well.
